What Is Shilajit?

Shilajit isn’t a plant, a mineral, or an extract in the usual sense. It’s a sticky, tar-like substance that seeps out of rock crevices in high-altitude mountain ranges, formed over a very long period from compressed plant material.

It’s found in the Himalayan belt, along with the Altai, Caucasus and a few other high mountain systems. In India, collection happens in high-altitude regions — generally above 3,000 metres, where the terrain and temperature conditions allow it to form and seep.

Raw shilajit comes out of the rock mixed with soil, plant fragments and mineral debris. It isn’t consumable in that state. It has to go through purification — traditionally called shodhana in Ayurvedic practice — before it becomes the resin sold in jars.

That purification step is where most of the difference between products lies. Not the mountain it came from.

Ours is sourced from Kashmir and purified before packing.

Resin, Powder or Capsule?

Shilajit is sold in three forms, and they aren’t equivalent.

FormWhat it isHandlingCommon concern
ResinPurified shilajit in its natural sticky stateSticky, needs dissolvingMessy to handle
PowderDried and ground, often with carriers addedEasy to measureCarriers and fillers vary
CapsulePowder in a capsule shellMost convenientContent varies by brand

Which Form Should You Buy?

Resin is closest to shilajit in its purified natural state, with nothing added to make it flow or fill a capsule. The trade-off is that it’s sticky and awkward to portion.

Powders and capsules are easier to use, but they can contain carriers, flow agents or excipients alongside the shilajit itself. That isn’t automatically a problem — it does mean the ingredient list matters more.

What to Look For When Buying Shilajit

Shilajit is one of the harder products to assess as a buyer, because the things that matter can’t be seen. A few things worth understanding:

Why Purification Matters

Raw shilajit collected from rock is not the same as the resin sold for consumption. It contains soil, organic debris and mineral matter that has to be removed.

Purification methods vary. Traditional processes use water extraction and filtration followed by controlled drying. Poorly purified shilajit can retain contaminants from the rock and soil it came from.

This isn’t a quality nuance — it’s the main safety consideration with this product.

Heavy Metal Testing

Shilajit is a rock exudate, which means it can carry whatever was in the surrounding mineral environment. Lead, arsenic and mercury contamination in inadequately purified shilajit is documented, and it’s the reason laboratory testing matters here more than with most products.

A seller should be able to tell you whether their stock has been tested for heavy metals, and show you the report. If they can’t, that’s the question to keep asking.

Batch information matters too, since testing applies to a specific batch rather than to a brand.

What Genuine Resin Looks Like

Purified shilajit resin is dark — brown-black to black — and glossy. It’s firm when cold and softens with warmth, which is why it behaves differently in summer and winter.

It has a distinct earthy, slightly smoky smell, and a bitter taste.

None of this proves purity. Appearance and texture can be approximated, which is why they aren’t a substitute for testing.

Why Home Tests Aren’t Reliable

There are several home tests circulated for shilajit — dissolving it in water, checking whether it burns, testing whether it hardens in cold.

These can tell you something about the physical form, but they can’t tell you about contaminants, and contaminants are the actual risk. A visually convincing resin can still carry heavy metals. For anything that matters here, the lab report is the answer.

How to Use Shilajit

Shilajit resin is dissolved rather than eaten directly. Warm water or warm milk is the usual method — stir until it dissolves fully.

Use the quantity stated on the pack. Shilajit is concentrated, and more is not better.

This page describes the product only. Shilajit is a health supplement, and how much is appropriate for you — or whether it is appropriate at all — depends on your health, medication and circumstances. Speak to a qualified doctor before starting it.

Who Should Not Take It

Speak to a doctor before taking shilajit if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking any regular medication, or have an existing health condition. It should not be given to children.

We’re not in a position to advise on any of this, and neither is anyone else selling it. That’s a conversation for a doctor.

How to Store Shilajit

  • Room temperature, in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Keep the jar tightly closed
  • Always use a dry spoon or the tool provided — moisture in the jar is a problem
  • Resin firms up in cold weather and softens in heat; both are normal
  • Don’t refrigerate

Follow the best-before date and storage instructions printed on the pack.
