What Are Mamra Badam?

Most people open their first pack of Mamra and think something’s gone wrong.

The almonds look uneven. Some are curved, some almost twisted, and no two are exactly the same size. After years of buying uniform, flat California almonds, this feels different.

That’s what Mamra looks like.

Mamra is a distinct almond variety, grown mainly in Iran, Afghanistan and parts of the Kashmir valley. Ours comes from the Kashmir Region, harvested around July to August End. It’s a lower-yielding tree, mostly hand-harvested, and the supply each year is limited. That’s the short version of why it costs what it costs.

The other thing you’ll notice is the taste. Mamra has a much higher natural oil content than California almonds, which gives it a richer, denser bite. Ayurvedic texts have traditionally favoured this variety, and the oil content is usually cited as the reason.

Mamra vs California vs Gurbandi: What’s the Difference?

Feature Mamra Badam California Gurbandi
Origin Kashmir, Iran, Afghanistan USA, Australia Afghanistan
Shape Curved, uneven Flat, uniform Small, rounded
Colour Deep brown Light tan Dark brown
Oil content Highest Lowest High
Taste Rich, buttery Mild Slightly sweet
Typical price/kg (Prices as of August 2026) ₹2,000 ₹1,100 ₹1,500

Here’s our honest take: if you’re buying almonds for baking, for milkshakes, or to chop into a dessert, don’t spend money on Mamra. California almonds work fine and cost a third as much.

Mamra is good for you when you’re eating a few soaked almonds every morning. That’s when the difference in taste and texture actually registers. Anywhere else, you’re paying for something you won’t notice.

How to Spot Genuine Mamra Badam

Mamra is one of the most commonly faked products in the dry fruit trade. Mixed batches- part Mamra, part California – are sold as pure Mamra all the time. Here’s four things to check:

Check Shape

Genuine Mamra is curved and irregular. Pick up ten almonds from a pack; if all ten look identical, it might not be real Mamra. Uniformity means machine grading, which means it probably isn’t Mamra.

Break one open

Mamra feels dense and slightly oily inside. It won’t give you the dry, clean picture of a California almond.

Look at Colour

Deep brown, not light tan. And if the almonds look glossy, they’ve likely been polished. We don’t polish ours, so what you get is the original one.

Compare Price

This is the one that catches most people. Rs 2000 per kg is roughly what genuine Mamra costs. If someone’s selling at half that, it’s a mixed batch there’s no other explanation, because the raw cost alone doesn’t allow for it.

None of these checks is foolproof on its own, and batches do vary naturally from season to season. But together they’ll tell you most of what you need to know.

How to Eat Mamra Badam

Soak them overnight. Six to eight hours in plain water is enough.

The skin comes off easily after soaking. You can also eat Mamra dry, straight from the pack. Soaking is tradition, not a rule.

How many Almonds a day?

It depends entirely on your diet and health. Ask your doctor or a dietitian if you want a figure that actually applies to you.

How to Store Mamra Badam

That high oil content is what makes Mamra taste good. It’s also what makes it go off faster than regular almonds.

  • Airtight container, always. Not the open jar on your kitchen counter.
  • Cool, dry, Away from direct sunlight.
  • If you’re in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or anywhere humid, keep it in the fridge.

If they ever smell sour or bitter, the oil has oxidized. Throw them out.

Why Buy Mamra Badam From Waadi Nut

We sort by hand. Every batch gets checked before packing, and broken, discoloured or undersized almonds get pulled out. It’s slow. It’s also the only way to do it properly with a variety this uneven, because machine grading would reject half of what’s actually good Mamra.

No polish, no chemicals. A lot of sellers polish almonds to make them shine. Ours look the way they came off the tree.

Vacuum-sealed. With this much natural oil, air is the enemy. Ordinary poly packaging doesn’t cut it.

Direct sourcing from Kashmir region. Fewer hands between the farm and your kitchen means fresher stock.
